The village of Madhawa in the Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh, India, has a history rooted in the region's pre-independence era as a princely state. Prior to the establishment of the Jashpur State by Sujan Rai, the area was ruled by the Dom dynasty, whose last ruler, Raibhan, was defeated and killed by Sujan Rai. Sujan Rai, the eldest son of a Suryavanshi king, led a popular revolt and established his kingdom in Sonepur, where Jashpur later became the administrative headquarters. The area was also known as Yashpur and Jagdishpur before being officially named Jashpur.
